WRITING

Definition:  The process of using symbols to represent ones ideas on paper.

In First Grade, writing is an important and difficult area for all students.  By the end of First Grade students must be able to write 5-6 sentences on a given topic with complete sentences, correct punctuation, correct capitalization and good letter formation.  First graders will write narrative and expository writing assignments.

WRITING STANDARDS

1.0 Writing Strategies

1.1 Select a focus when writing.

1.2 Use descriptive words when writing.

1.3 Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately. Sentences written consecutively.

2.0 Writing Applications (Genres and Their Characteristics)

2.1 Write brief narratives (e.g., fictional, autobiographical) describing an experience.

2.2 Write brief expository descriptions of a real object, person, place, or event, using sensory details.

WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONVENTIONS

1.0 Written and Oral English Language Conventions

1.1 Write and speak in complete, coherent sentences.

1.2 Identify and correctly use singular and plural nouns.

1.3 Identify and correctly use contractions (e.g., isn't, aren't, can't, won't) and singular possessive pronouns (e.g., my/ mine, his/ her, hers, your/s) in writing and speaking.

1.4 Distinguish between declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative sentences

1.5 Use a period, exclamation point, or question mark at the end of sentences.

1.6 Use knowledge of the basic rules of punctuation and capitalization when writing.

1.7 Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I.

1.8 Spell three-and four-letter short-vowel words and grade-level-appropriate sight words correctly.

***Writing Process***

*Pre-writing (Brainstorming): Organize your ideas on the topic you are writing about.

*Writing: Take your ideas and put them in writing.

 

*Revising:  Read your writing to look for mistakes and thing you can improve on.

*Editing:  Correct your mistakes and write a final draft.

 

*Publishing: Share your writing.

 Narrative Writing

Definition: writing about a story that describes an experience fiction or real.  The story must have characters, setting, problem and solution with a beginning, middle and end.

For the first and second trimester students will focus on narrative writing.  The objective is for students to learn to write 3 complete sentences for the first trimester and 5 complete sentences for the second trimester with correct punctuation and sequential order.  The following documents have the organizers we will be implementing in class.

 Expository Writing 

Definition: writing in which students are required to describe, explain, inform, clarify or instruct.  It must contain sequential words, such as First, Next and Last.

For the thurd trimester students will focus on expository writing. The objective is for students to learn to write 6 complete sentences with correct punctuation following the order of events on how to complete a given task. The following documents have the organizers we will be implementing in class.
